A crown is a cap that covers the whole surface of a damaged tooth, both strengthening it and restoring its appearance. Zirconium crowns are made from a very strong, metal-free ceramic and are preferred especially for back teeth, where chewing forces are high, and for bridges. E-max crowns are made from a glass ceramic that lets light through like a natural tooth and stand out for front teeth, where aesthetics come first.

- Severe discolouration that does not respond to whitening

Zirconium or E-max?
Both are metal-free ceramics with a natural look. The choice depends on the position of the tooth and your needs. Zirconium is usually preferred for back teeth and bridges because of its strength, while E-max is usually preferred for front teeth because of how it lets light through. We decide together at the examination which is right for you.
The Zirconium and E-max Crown Process
The teeth receiving crowns are first carefully reduced. A digital impression is then taken with the iTero intraoral scanner and the zirconium or E-max crowns are made for you in the laboratory. You wear temporary teeth in the meantime, so your appearance is maintained. At the final session the fit and colour of the crowns are checked and the crowns are fixed to your teeth.

Making Your Crowns Last
- Brush crowned teeth twice a day, just like your natural teeth.
- Clean around the edges of the crowns every day with floss or an interdental brush.
- Avoid biting hard objects and opening packets with your teeth.
- If you grind your teeth, wear a night guard.
- Come for a check-up at least once a year.

Will my teeth be reduced a lot?
For a crown to sit securely, a certain amount of reduction is needed over the whole surface of the tooth. We plan this according to the condition of the tooth and protect as much of it as possible.
How many sessions does a crown take?
In most cases it is completed in two or three sessions. The number of sessions depends on how many crowns are made and whether any additional treatment is needed.
Do crowns change colour over time?
Ceramic crowns are resistant to colour change over time. Because the colour of your natural teeth can change, we recommend whitening before your crowns are made if you are considering it.
Can the tooth under a crown decay?
If the edges of the crown are not cleaned well, the tooth underneath can decay. This is why using floss or an interdental brush and having regular check-ups is important.
Will I have sensitivity after the crowns are fitted?
There may be mild sensitivity to hot and cold in the first few days. It usually settles on its own quickly.
