Zygomatic Implant

At our practice in Konyaaltı, Antalya, zygomatic implant treatment starts with a thorough examination, a 3D CT scan when needed and a detailed analysis of your jaw. Planned for patients who do not have enough bone in the upper jaw, this treatment anchors the implants in the cheekbone (zygoma). Our aim is to give you fixed, secure teeth even when bone loss is severe.

What Is a Zygomatic Implant?

Zygomatic implants are specially made long implants used when there is not enough bone in the upper jaw for a conventional implant. Instead of the upper jawbone, they are anchored in the cheekbone (zygoma), which is much denser and stronger. This allows fixed teeth to be made even for patients with severe bone loss in the upper jaw.

Who Is It Suitable For?

  • Patients with severe bone loss in the upper jaw
  • Patients who cannot have a bone graft or sinus lift, or for whom one has failed
  • Patients whose upper jawbone has thinned after years of wearing a removable denture
  • In suitable cases, patients who want to avoid months of grafting and waiting

We determine whether the treatment is right for you with a detailed examination and, when needed, a 3D CT scan.

The Zygomatic Implant Process

In zygomatic implant treatment, specially made long implants are placed in the cheekbone. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia. In suitable cases, temporary fixed teeth can be fitted on the same day or within 24–48 hours, and you can return to your daily routine soon.

Zygomatic implant placement is an advanced surgical procedure carried out close to important structures such as the sinus and the eye socket, and it requires expertise in oral and maxillofacial surgery. At our practice, planning and surgery are carried out personally by Dr. Seçil D. Sümengen Yazıcı. The angle and position of the implants are planned in advance on the CT scan.

Compared with a Bone Graft

When there is not enough bone in the upper jaw, one option is to build up the bone with a bone graft or sinus lift and then place conventional implants. This usually requires an extra operation and a wait of several months. Zygomatic implants, on the other hand, are often placed without a bone graft and allow fixed teeth to be reached sooner. We decide together which method is better for each patient based on the CT findings.

  • The permanent teeth are made once the implants have fused with the bone.

Are zygomatic implants safe?

When placed by an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon, they are an advanced implant treatment with safe and successful results.

How are they different from conventional implants?

Conventional implants are placed in the jawbone. Zygomatic implants are longer and are anchored in the cheekbone when there is not enough bone in the upper jaw.

Can teeth be fitted on the same day?

In suitable cases, temporary fixed teeth can be fitted on the day of surgery or within 24–48 hours. The permanent teeth are made once fusion with the bone is complete.

How many zygomatic implants are needed?

Usually one or two zygomatic implants are placed on each side, often combined with conventional implants at the front. We decide the number based on your CT findings.

Will I feel pain during the procedure?

Because the procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia, you feel no pain during it. Any swelling and sensitivity in the following days is controlled with medication.
